2014 Sculpture Prizes & Exhibitions

Sculpture on the Edge - Bermagui, NSW
Held annually in Bermagui, on the NSW far south coast, Sculpture on the Edge includes an exhibition of large sculptural pieces in the magnificent settings of Endeavour Point Headland, Dickinson Park, and Horseshoe Bay beach, an indoor exhibition of smaller sculptures in the Bermagui Community Centre and, this year, was held from March 1 to March 10. Thor was a finalist in the Indoor section.
 2014 Sawmillers Sculpture Prize
Sculpture at Sawmillers 2014 was held from March 8 to 16, 2014, at Sawmillers Reserve in McMahons Point, Sydney. The exhibits were selected by a small panel including: Sculptor Michael Snape, Gallery Director Jane Watters and Curator Nick Vickers. The exhibition was project managed by Elsa Atkin, former CEO of the National Trust of Australia and initiator of the inaugural Sculpture at Sawmillers exhibition in 2010.
 La Lune  at Long Reef Promontory
From May 10 to 18, 2014, international and local artists presented a unique night sculpture walk – creating art produced by and, responsive to, the dramatic environment at Long Reef Headland on Sydney’s northern beaches. The exhibition was a collaboration between Warringah Council and the Environmental Research Initiative for Art, College of Fine Arts, University of New South Wales and was sponsored by Long Reef Golf Club.
Art Studio for Thor in Canberra
Since the beginning of 2014, Thor and his fellow artist and partner, Melissa Beowulf, have been sharing a studio at the M16 Artspace in Griffith, Canberra. This has enabled him to npt only prepare works for exhibition in Sydney but also to participate in various events at the studios and in collaboration with other tenants.
In early May, M16 Artspace, in collaboration with Griffith Narrabundah Community Association, hosted the Annual Birthday party to celebrate the local community with its the residents and businesses. It coincided with an exhibition, Our Garden Suburb, a pop up sculpture exhibition in which Thor participated, as well as a wonderful display of bonsai in the Open Studio segment of the celebrations.
In May, Thor exhibited bonsai with fellow tenant, Julie Bradley, in  Corpus: Collages and works on paper, which also featured sculptures by Mike MacGregor at Form Studio and Gallery, in Queanbeyan.
In July, Thor was invited to participate in an exhibition at M16 by the Japanese Embassy and Japan Foundation, Winter Garden: The Exploration of the Micropop Imagination in Contemporary Japanese Art, featuring drawings, paintings and video works by 14 Japanese artists active from  1990-2010 including video by Koki Tanaka (Japan's 2013 Venice Biennale artist). Thor presented Sho-Chiku-Bai: the Three Friends of Winter, a presentation of three bonsai: the plum, the pine and bamboo. The exhibition ran from July 10 to 27.

 2014 M16 Artists’ Exhibition
Thor and Melissa both exhibited in the 2014 M16 Artists’ Exhibition, running from 21 August - 7 to September 2014 as well as the Open Studios.

In September, Thor exhibited some of his bonsai with fellow artists, Kristel Smits and Cindy Yuen-Zhe Chen, in their exhibition, Miniature Cosmos, supported by Marrickville Council and AirProjects.com.
